Capitol Police Chief Challenges Pelosi on January 6 Response

Former U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund publicly pushed back against former House Speaker

Nancy Pelosi’s claim that Donald Trump delayed the National Guard response on January 6.

“Donald Trump delayed deploying the National Guard,” Pelosi said, accusing him of trying to distract from policy failures. Sund responded, “Ma’am, it is long past time to be honest with the American people.”

Sund: Guard Request Was Denied by Pelosi’s Office

Sund explained that on January 3, 2021, he formally requested National Guard support, but it was rejected by the House Sergeant at Arms, who reports to Pelosi.

“Under federal law… I was prohibited from calling them in without specific approval,” he said. During the riot, he added, “your Sergeant at Arms again denied my urgent requests for over 70 agonizing minutes, ‘running it up the chain’ for your approval.”

He accused Pelosi of inconsistency: “When I needed assistance, it was denied. Yet when it suited you, you ordered fencing topped with concertina wire and surrounded the Capitol with thousands of armed National Guard troops.”
