Parents refuse to abort deformed baby

Expecting Brody
Sara Heller and her partner Chris were excited to welcome their baby, Brody.

But at their 24-week ultrasound, doctors revealed he had a bilateral cleft lip and palate.

They were asked if they wanted to keep the baby — for Sara and Chris, there was no question.

Spreading Awareness
Determined to embrace Brody as he was, Sara said, “It is OK to be proud of your baby no matter the circumstances.”

The couple used social media to spread awareness about cleft conditions and challenge stereotypes.

Challenges and Education
Sara received hurtful comments online, like “What’s wrong with his face?”

Instead of reacting with anger, she said, “I decided to educate rather than create a confrontation.”

Support and Strength
One stranger even gave them $1,000 to help with medical costs, with a note that read, “for the beautiful baby.”

Brody has since had surgery and is recovering well.
