Young Woman Dies After Euthanasia Request Is Granted
Erika Deyanira Morales, a 20-year-old left quadriplegic after a violent attack at age 17,
has died following a long fight to access euthanasia.
The attack, which occurred in a bar bathroom in Pasto,
left her unable to move or care for herself.
Though Erika’s family said her health provider Emssanar denied the euthanasia request,
her sister Tatiana’s advocacy and social media support led to approval on February 22.
The procedure was carried out on March 1.
“Fly high, my beautiful angel, I love you always, little sister,”
Tatiana posted, sharing touching images of them together.
Morales had endured constant pain. Using assisted communication, she expressed her wish to end her suffering.
Her story became a symbol for the right to die with dignity.
Though Erika had recent health complications,
the exact cause of death hasn’t been confirmed.
