NASA Claims The Sun Is “Waking Up,”
NASA: The Sun Is ‘Waking Up’—And Earth Could Feel It
After decades of weakening, the sun is roaring back to life.
From 1988 to 2008, its solar wind steadily weakened,
with Solar Cycle 24 (2008–2019) the weakest since records began.
Scientists expected this quiet phase to last.
“All signs were pointing to the sun going into a prolonged phase of low activity,”
said lead author Jamie Jasinski of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
“So it was a surprise to see that trend reversed. The sun is slowly waking up.”
Since 2008, solar wind density is up 26%, temperature 29%, and
magnetic field strength more than 30%, according to The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
This surge could disrupt satellites, GPS, and power grids, while producing brilliant auroras worldwide.
But longer trends remain uncertain.
“The longer-term trends are a lot less predictable and are something we don’t completely understand yet,” Jasinski noted.
