South Carolina Judge Diane Goodst
A peaceful Saturday morning on Edisto Beach turned chaotic when flames engulfed the home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein
and her husband, former state senator Arnold Goodstein. Around 11:30 a.m. on October 4, 2025, thick smoke rose over the marshfront
in the Jeremy Cay neighborhood. Judge Goodstein was walking her dogs when the fire broke out, while Arnold was still inside.
Witnesses reported hearing an explosion before the blaze spread rapidly. Arnold jumped from the burning home into the marsh, where neighbors and first
responders rescued him. Two others were also saved, and several people were hospitalized — one airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina.
Officials from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating but have yet to determine the cause, not ruling out arson.
The fire occurred just weeks after Judge Goodstein presided over a politically sensitive voter privacy case, prompting increased patrols and public concern.
Judge Goodstein, a respected jurist since 1998, is known for fairness and dedication to justice. Her husband, a veteran and former senator, is also
highly regarded. As investigators search for answers, the tight-knit community stands united, offering prayers and support amid the devastating loss.
