House Passes Bill To Deport Migrants
House Passes Bill to Deport Illegal Immigrants Who Assault Police
The GOP-led House has passed the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who
Assault Cops Act in a 265–148 vote, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), requires that any
illegal immigrant accused of assaulting law enforcement officers be detained until deportation proceedings conclude.
Support and Criticism
Van Drew said anyone who attacks police officers “should not be allowed to stay” in the U.S.
Supporters argue the measure protects law enforcement and reinforces respect for the law.
Critics, however, accuse Republicans of politicizing crime and immigration ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Political Context
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) claimed Democrats who opposed the bill “protect violent,
illegal immigrants over our brave law enforcement officers.”
Election Momentum
A new CNN poll shows Republicans leading Democrats by 12 points on handling the economy
, with analysts noting GOP gains among middle-class voters as both crime and economic issues dominate the political landscape.
