Jeffries Losing Support, Dozens o
Growing Doubts About Jeffries’ Leadership
Dozens of Democratic House candidates told Axios they may not
back Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for party leader, signaling unrest as the 2026 election nears.
Survey Results
Out of 113 Democratic candidates contacted, 20 said they wouldn’t vote for Jeffries,
five were likely to oppose him, and 57 refused to commit.
Only 24 pledged firm support. Many cited concerns about ideology, messaging, and leadership style.
Criticism from the Left
Progressives argue Jeffries isn’t fighting hard enough against Republicans.
“We need a new type of leadership that’s going to fight back significantly harder,” said candidate Heath Howard.
Kat Abughazaleh added that Democrats must “use our leverage to demand progressive change.”
Jeffries’ Response
Jeffries’ office dismissed the reports, saying he remains focused on
“battling Donald Trump, ending the Republican shutdown … and addressing the crushing GOP health care crisis.”
