HE WOULDN’T LET GO OF MY LEG—A
From Walmart Parking Lot to a Forever Bond
I only went to Walmart for trash bags and cat litter — but fate had other plans.
Near the cart return sat a scruffy dog, waiting for someone who never came back.
When I knelt beside him, he leaned into me and wrapped a paw around my leg, as if to say, “You. You’re safe.”
Animal control said he’d been abandoned and might be euthanized within 72 hours.
I couldn’t let that happen — so I adopted him. I named him Rufus, and he quickly became my best friend.
Months later, I discovered Rufus was really Max, a lost dog whose owners had been searching for him.
Returning him broke my heart — until his owners came back with two of his puppies.
Now, every time I look at them, I’m reminded that love isn’t about keeping — it’s about caring, even when it means letting go.
