Mamdani Referred to DOJ For Criminal
Mamdani Faces Criminal Referrals Over Alleged Illegal Donations
New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani faces two criminal referrals after
the Coolidge Reagan Foundation accused his campaign of accepting illegal foreign donations.
The group filed complaints with the Department of Justice and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg,
citing possible violations of federal and state election laws.
Foreign Money Allegations
According to The New York Post, Mamdani’s campaign received nearly $13,000 from about 170 donors abroad,
including one from his mother-in-law in Dubai. Foundation president Dan Backer said,
“This was a sustained pattern of foreign money flowing into a New York City mayoral race,” calling it a “clear violation” of campaign rules.
Campaign Response
Spokesperson Dora Pekec said some donors may be “U.S.
citizens or lawful permanent residents” living overseas and that improper donations would be refunded.
Political Impact
Despite the controversy, polls show Mamdani leading rivals Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.
