Ground beef is a staple in many dishes, but should you rinse it after cooking?
Some believe rinsing “helps reduce fat and calories by washing away excess grease,” making meals like tacos or chili seem lighter.
However, food safety experts warn against it.
Rinsing can cause “bacteria-laden water to splash onto sinks, counters, or nearby food,” increasing contamination risks.
It also washes away flavor. The process removes not only fat but “the
flavorful juices that give the meat richness,” leaving it dry or bland.
Instead, experts recommend draining the grease in a colander, blotting with paper towels, or spooning it out.
Always cook beef to 160°F (71°C) for safety, and never pour hot fat down the drain.
