Trump Escalator Mishap at UN Sparks Investigation and Jokes
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were briefly stranded Tuesday
when an escalator stopped at UN headquarters just before Trump’s address.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt demanded an inquiry, saying,
“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator…
they need to be fired and investigated immediately.”
She later told Fox News the incident “appears to be sabotage.”
UN officials denied any foul play.
Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric explained the stoppage occurred when a videographer walking backward triggered a
“built-in safety mechanism on the comb step,” stressing there was “nothing nefarious” behind it.
Trump joked about the event in his speech, saying,
“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle,”
and quipped that Melania’s fitness saved them.
He also poked fun at a frozen teleprompter before resuming his UN criticism,
accusing the organization of creating “new problems.”
