‘We Caught Them’ — Speaker John
1. Shutdown and Healthcare Debate
Speaker Mike Johnson told Newsmax that once the government shutdown ends, House Republicans plan to focus on lowering healthcare costs.
The House passed a temporary funding bill, but it stalled in the Senate amid disagreements over expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies.
2. GOP Criticism of Subsidies
Johnson argued that subsidies benefit insurers instead of lowering prices.
“The problem is that we are subsidizing very wealthy insurance companies,” he said, adding that the ACA is “a broken and failing system.”
3. Removed GOP Provisions
He said Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act included measures to cut premiums by 12.7%, but “the Democrats fought to take it out of the bill.”
Johnson stressed the need for reforms rather than subsidies. “Merely subsidizing something is not the answer.”
4. Next Steps
With subsidies ending Dec. 31, Johnson said Republicans will reintroduce ideas and seek bipartisan agreement.
“We’re going to have to get a bipartisan consensus… and present our ideas.”
