Top Democrat Faces Legal Firestorm
1. Backlash Against Raskin
Rep. Jamie Raskin faces criticism after publishing private prison emails written by Ghislaine Maxwell. Her attorney, Leah Saffian,
called it “a gross abuse of power” and said “his conduct undermines the whole legal process.”
2. Prison Emails and Firings
Federal officials confirmed multiple employees were fired for leaking the emails. Saffian argued the disclosures were “a breach of constitutional protections.”
The messages showed Maxwell praising her new facility: “The food is legions better… the staff responsive and polite.” She also mocked her old prison:
“no possums falling from the ceiling to fry on ovens.”
3. Clemency Claim Dispute
Raskin suggested a whistleblower told him Maxwell was preparing a clemency request. Saffian denied it: “Ms. Maxwell has not requested a commutation.”
Maxwell instead plans to challenge her 2021 conviction.
4. Political and Legal Fallout
Republicans said Raskin showed “a reckless disregard for due process.” Saffian warned, “Members of Congress are not above the Constitution.”
