For generations, Christians have debated whether cremation aligns with
biblical teaching, especially as it becomes more common today.
Scripture emphasizes the value of the human body as part of God’s creation, and Genesis 3:19 speaks of the body’s return to the earth.
Traditionally, burial has been common in the Bible, as “many well-known figures were laid to rest through burial, including Abraham’s family and Jesus Himself.”
Fire in Scripture is often linked to “judgment or purification,” which has led some believers to view cremation cautiously.
Burial, instead, is seen as symbolic of resurrection hope, similar to planting a seed, supported by passages like 1 Corinthians 15 that focus on transformation and renewal.
However, the Bible does not say cremation prevents resurrection or separates someone from God.
Many accept that “God’s power is not limited by physical processes,” making the choice between burial and cremation a matter of personal faith rather than strict command.
