The Surprising Purpose of the Little Bow

Women’s underwear bow: The Surprising History Behind It

Many assume the tiny bow on women’s underwear is just decorative. However, historians trace it back to a practical purpose centuries ago.

Before elastic waistbands, undergarments were secured with ribbons or strings tied at the front. These early “drawers” were fastened with a bow that hid the knot and kept the garment neat.

The bow also had a useful role. Before electricity, people often dressed in dim light. It wasn’t always easy to tell front from back.

The small bow acted as a tactile guide, allowing wearers to identify the front by touch. It was essentially a built-in marker.

When elastic waistbands became common in the 20th century, front ties were no longer necessary. Still, designers kept the bow as a traditional detail.

Over time, it became associated with softness and classic lingerie style. What started as function turned into fashion.

Today, while some see it as unnecessary, the tiny bow remains a subtle reminder that everyday clothing often carries hidden history.
