New Fee Increase for Foreign Visitors
Donald Trump signed an executive order to raise entrance fees for foreign tourists at U.S. national parks. This change affects only parks that already charge fees and aims to prioritize American visitors.
“America First” Policy
At a July 4th rally, Trump said, “The national parks will be about America first,” and explained the order is to “fund improvements and enhanced experiences across the park system” while “keeping prices low for Americans.”
Prioritizing U.S. Visitors
The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to give U.S. residents priority in access rules like permits or lotteries over international visitors.
Balancing Tourism and Budget
Though fees for foreign tourists will rise, the Interior Department must still encourage international tourism. The new surcharge could generate over $90 million yearly, helping fund parks after previous budget cuts and staff reductions.
