Devastating Floods Strike Ruidoso
On June 8, flash floods swept through Ruidoso, New Mexico, already weakened by past wildfires. Mayor Lynn Crawford called it “one of the worst events in the town’s history.”
Mudslides, gas leaks, and three deaths — including two children — were confirmed. The Rio Ruidoso hit a record 20-foot crest.
Wildfire Damage Worsens Impact
Burned, hydrophobic soil from last year’s fires worsened flooding, as water couldn’t soak into the ground. Homes and cars were washed away, and emergency shelters were set up.
Texas Camp Tragedy
Meanwhile, Central Texas faced its own disaster.
In Kerr County, 43 people died after intense rains caused a deadly flood wave. At Camp Mystic, rising river waters forced major rescue efforts.
Calls for Unity and Support
With rescue missions ongoing, officials urge residents to stay safe and report the missing. Communities across both states are “calling for strength, compassion, and continued support.”
