Abbott Has New Warning For Dems Who Fled
Texas Democrats Face Legal Threats Over Redistricting Walkout
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton warned Democratic lawmakers to return to the state by Friday or face legal consequences for fleeing to block a GOP-backed redistricting vote.
“If they do not show up, we will be in an Illinois courtroom… hold them in contempt… hopefully put them in jail,” Paxton told Fox & Friends.
GOP Leaders Push Back
Governor Greg Abbott threatened harsher political consequences if the standoff continues, saying, “If they don’t start showing up, I may start expanding it… six or seven or eight new seats.”
Legal and Law Enforcement Measures
Civil arrest warrants were issued, and Paxton said a motion would be filed to remove lawmakers from office. “We’re in uncharted territory,” he noted.
Broader GOP Strategy
Abbott defended the redistricting push, saying, “There is every reason to… draw the lines so that we can assure that every voter is going to have the opportunity to vote for their candidate of choice.”
