Ancient Forest Discovered in Giant Sinkhole

Deep inside a 630-foot sinkhole in China’s Leye-Fengshan Global Geopark, scientists have discovered a vast, ancient forest.

A Unique Geological Wonder

Located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,

the area is known for its dramatic karst landscape.

UNESCO says the geopark is “primarily sedimentary with

more than 60 percent of 3000m thick Devonian to Permian carbonate rocks.”

Shaped by Nature Over Millennia

The park forms “an ‘S’-shaped structure and a rhombus configuration”

that guided the formation of underground rivers like the Bailang and Poyue.

These features helped create numerous geosites such as “karst peak clusters (fengcong), poljes, caves, cave chambers, and speleothems.”

A Site of Global Significance

UNESCO notes the park holds “the world’s most beautiful karst windows,

the highest density of tiankengs, and the world’s longest natural bridges.”

It also contains fossils, fault zones, and major cave systems, making it a globally significant natural wonder.
