Hawaii Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Scare

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Hawaii on Saturday night, triggered by a quake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

The tremor hit at 8:49 p.m. local time, prompting a tsunami watch by 9:03 p.m.

Tsunami Watch Canceled

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center quickly canceled the watch, assuring the public there was no threat.

Residents shared relief online, telling others to “calm down” and resume their evening.

The center said no further updates would be issued unless new information arose.

Quakes in Kamchatka

Earlier, Kamchatka experienced several strong quakes,

including a 7.0 magnitude followed by others between 6.6 and 7.4.

Authorities warned locals to stay away from the coast but noted waves were expected to be minor.

Historical Anxiety

Memories of a 1952 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami that devastated Hawaii heightened public concern,

even though the recent warning was lifted.
