NEW: Democrat Senator Flips
Fetterman Breaks With Democrats
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized his own party for prolonging the
government shutdown, urging immediate action to restore funding.
“There are no winners here. It’s not getting better every day here.
People are going to start to get really hungry,”
he said, emphasizing the need to reopen the government and fund SNAP.
Supporting the GOP Move
When asked about Republicans using the “nuclear option” to bypass the filibuster, Fetterman said,
“We ran on that. We ran on killing the filibuster, and now we love it… Carve it out so we can move on.”
Call to Action
Calling the shutdown “bad political theater,” he declared, “Open it up.”
Pushback
Critics like Ed Kilgore argued Fetterman misunderstood past Democratic efforts,
noting that filibuster changes were meant for voting-rights bills, not budget disputes, saying,
“It’s what the carve-out is for and whom it benefits.”
