Deadly Flash Flood Hits Kerrville, Texas
A sudden flash flood struck Kerr County, Texas, on the Fourth of July, causing devastating damage and at least 51 deaths, including 15 children.
The Guadalupe River overflowed quickly, sweeping through the area and trapping many people. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with officials searching for missing children from Camp Mystic, a summer camp hit hard by the flood.
Search for Missing Children Continues
Around 750 girls attended Camp Mystic, and up to 20 are still unaccounted for. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said the missing children are not necessarily “lost,” explaining they “could be out of communication” due to the loss of power and water at the camp.
Sadly, the mother of nine-year-old Janie Hunt confirmed her daughter has died in the flood, even as many parents anxiously seek news of their children.
Emergency Response and Community Impact
The Kerrville Police Department stated, “Hundreds of first responders are here with resources from throughout the state to help us,” and added, “Our thoughts remain with those who are unaccounted for and their loved ones. They are our focus and will remain so.” The flood’s rapid onset shocked many, captured vividly in a timelapse video showing a road turn from clear to submerged within minutes.
